Sony to Discontinue Selling the Clie Out Side of Japan
Sony is going to stop selling the Clie handhelds in the US / Canada
market in the fall. They will still continue to support their existing
customers. The declining sales had a big part to do with this decision, that and
the overly aggressive competition, especially at the low end handheld market.
The current models will continue to be sold until at least the fall. These
models include the TJ27, TJ37, UX50 and the TH55.

October 20th, 2002 Handspring
Posted Earnings for Q1
Handspring posted their earnings on Thursday for Q1. With a revenue
of $54.1 million for the first quarter of fiscal 2003. This is compared with
$61.4 million for last year and $49.0 million for Q4 in fiscal 2002. In other
words they beat last quarter but are still behind last years numbers. The net
loss during Q1 was $15.3 million. So this means they are up from last quarter
but still in the red.

September 23rd, 2002 Palm's
new handhelds are getting closer
The rumors about the new Palm OS handhelds have been around for quite
some time but we are getting closer to the truth. "Six years
after pioneering the handheld market, Palm, Inc. today defined a new era in
handheld computing with the creation of two distinct subbrands for its portfolio
of handheld products - the Tungsten and Zire families. Tungsten products will
provide powerful solutions for mobile professionals and enterprise work forces;
Zire handhelds will provide affordable options for individuals to organize their
busy lives." (quote form a recent press release from Palm Inc.) So
the Zire handhelds will be for the budget minded and the Tungsten models will be
the ones we should be drooling after. The big "new model" has even had
some pictures circulating that shows a 320x320 display with a slide down
graffiti area. A little bird told me that the slide down area is incorrect, but
I guess we all just have to wait a bit longer to see what these new models have
in store for us. What we can assume that is that the lower end models will still
be running on OS 4.1 and new upscale models will have OS 5, at this point
everything else is pure speculation.

June 12th, 2002 Palm Interim
CEO Eric Benhamou Hints at Three New Handhelds
Eric Benhamou hinted at releasing three new devices sometime in the
fall. One that will be around the $100 (US) price point. The target is to
increase the companies market by up to four times. With hints such as built in
keyboards and more, we will just have to wait until the units are a little
closer to release dates to know what they will be like. One thing for sure is
the company seems to have a plan of how to stay #1 in the handheld arena, a task
that is not going to be easy with all the new devices coming out by various
competitors. Thanks, CNet
for the news.

May4th, 2002 Handspring Chief
Financial Officer to Resign
According to Handspring spokesman Alan Bush, Handsprings CFO Bernard
Whitney will resign his position on July 1st to spend more time with his family.
Anytime an executive leaves a company is not a good time, with Handsprings
recent press releases of losses and falling stock prices this is really bad
news. Bernard Whitney joined Handspring in June of 1999, he formerly worked for
Connor Peripherals, Network General Corporation and Sanmina. According to the
statement, he is taking time off from the technical industry to spend more time
with his family. Read what CNet
has to say about this recent news.
April 30th, 2002 New ARM
Processors to reach 1GHZ
The ARM processors are currently used by many PDA builders including
the iPAQ and HP Jornada and the upcoming PalmOS devices running OS5. ARM announced
the launch of the ARM11™. These new processors are expected to deliver speeds
over 500 MHZ at 0.13u foundry process and speed over 1GHz at 0.1u. These
processors will consume less than 0.4mW/MHz on the 0.13u die. Read the press
release for more details.
April 15th, 2002 Handspring
releases dismal numbers to stockholders
Handsprings latest press release shows that they numbers were down
for Q3, down 15% from Q2 and 52% from Q3 last year. Let us all hope the Treo
sells like they expect, and they don't make any more slip ups like the one they
make earlier this year stating they were "getting out of the organizer
business". This slip-up may have cost them dearly. But the projection
looks good as long as the Treo keeps selling.
April 10th, 2002 Palm™ was
#1 in Canada for 2001
Palm™ was the king of the handheld world in Canada, with 71% of the
handheld market share for 2001. Of all handheld computers shipped 85% of them
were using Palm OS®. Overall the handheld market grew by 35% over last year
(2000). This is fantastic growth considering that 2001 was a very bad year for
the tech industry, with dot com's falling down and of course 9-11. To date, more
than 16 million Palm handhelds have been sold worldwide -- 850,000 in Canada
alone -- and the number of Canadian developers for the Palm OS platform jumped
to more than 10,000 in 2001.
