Club Photo has done it again, this time with the new release of Album To Goversion 2. How would you like to always have a photo album of your favorite pictures ready? How about showing off the grandkids or maybe even your own, without pulling out the big photo album? Maybe you just want to have one of those picture frames that changes on you desk? Well you guessed it that is exactly what this program enables your Palm(tm) enabled device to become.

The application itself is only 147K, so you will have lots of room to add your favorite photos, with a quick sampling of five photo's saved with 8 Bit color the Album only took up 158K. I found this to be less space that I was expecting. If you don't have color device don't worry, you will be able to see your photo's in grayscale. If you were to add lots of photo's you may eventually run out of space on you handheld. It's so easy to update I really doubt that this would be a problem.

Sending the pictures to your handheld is really simple, the Album To Go comes with companion software for your Windows enabled PC. Just start this software and you will find the interface very to use, browse your PC for your pictures you want to put into your digital album. The picture type could be JPG, GIF or a BMP file. You can then crop the photo to fit perfectly on the palm or leave it as is. At this point you can choose how big and what color or grayscale you would like to have the pictures saved as. Once you have picked a few pictures, maybe added some comments about the picture if you like, the next logical step would be to save your Album, just in case you wanted to use it again. Then click on the button "Send To HotSync". The next time you HotSync(tm) your handheld you will have an Album to show off to your friends, coworkers or just plain view the pictures yourself.

From your handheld you can view the pictures individually or present a slideshow from each Album, you can choose a transition or just pick a random transition for the slides as they come into view on your handheld. Already I have learned that I like having this ever changing picture on my desk. My Palm(tm) is sitting in the charger/cradle and changing the picture every twenty seconds, you could choose a shorter or longer time if you prefer. This is great for us workaholics, we can now know what our family and friends look like from our desk. Because the screen is changing it catches the eyes of anyone who happens to walk by and you have just sparked a conversation about your family!

With this version of Album To Go, you can zoom in and out. Also new to version 2.0 are the nine slide show special effects, this is a feature that I really like.

Album To Go Desktop Screen

To really have fun with Album To Go, you are going to want a color handheld, something like a Handspring Visor Prism or Palm IIIC, but even the grayscale pictures are quite stunning. OK stunning might be a bit much but it's my family! Self gratification plug out of the way. The grayscale pictures look very good.

One catch might be that you need to have a way to get the pictures into your computer. If you have a digital camera or scanner your are ready to go. If you are not so fortunate to have one of these devices, many places that you get your film developed can either put your pictures on CD or some even publish them to the Internet for you. If you prefer, you can send your film in to Club Photo and they can develop your film and post your pictures online for you as well. Now we know why the are giving this wonderful software to you for free, this is a pay service. Check their web page for prices.

Final Words:

Album To Go is quite simply a wonderful idea that is extremely easy to use. The pictures are easy to update so you can keep some old pictures as well as something brand new. No more going to the photo lab to have that photo fitted to the frame on the desk. You can have a current picture of your family instead of the same one for five years!
