The built in security in the PalmOS is not very secure, actually anyone who knows what they are doing can easily access this information. I am not going to tell you how, but trust me it is very easy to see those records marked "private" in the default PalmOS. Chapura has a new product! Cloak was released in the fall of 2001. This secure digital wallet is for storing all those passwords and other confidential data that you might want in a handy but in a secure form. Cloak uses 128-bit Blowfish encryption to protect your data both on the desktop and handheld. The desktop application is very straight forward, just click the "New Account" button and start entering data. The type of accounts are customizable, as are most of the other areas of the program. There are default field tags to enter your data. You have six fields plus a note field for each account. The field tags are customizable for each account. IE: you can label the fields for each Web Login account, if you would like. The maximum size of a Note field within a specific Cloak account is 4096 characters. This limitation applies both to the Cloak Desktop and Cloak for the handheld. If you enter a URL or a link to a website, the link will show as a hyperlink right in the desktop application. You can just click this link and you will taken to the web site. Once there, because you probably have the Cloak Desktop open, you can easily enter your login id and password. You can even cut and paste this if you know how to use that right click button on your mouse! If it sounds too easy to be true, you just have to try it. Chapura offers a trial version of this software. I think they know once you try it you are going to like it. The matching PalmOS software is just a easy and secure. If you, or someone else, happens to enter the incorrect password to open the program they will get a nasty message and have to wait ten seconds to try again. Once you have successfully entered the password the program warns that the incorrect password was entered, it even tells you many attempts were made. Isn't it nice to know that your lunch partner was trying to snoop at your data while you went to the salad bar?
With this much data being entered, my only wish so far is that it had an import and export function. Having this would be less secure as the data is now elsewhere, but with this much data it would be nice to know that you had a backup in a completely separate program like excel or a database program. You could always password protect that and put it away somewhere safe. Sometimes you just want the flexibility to import or export the data easily into another program. You can however beam the records to another handheld. Chapura's technical support is top notch, they answered my email very quickly. They also have online and telephone support. Final Words:
