Having a home theater is not complete without a fancy remote for your system. Most home theaters will have many remotes sitting about, some of these controllers may claim to be universal but they usually are missing some functions. So you keep all these remotes on your coffee table, in my case this means five remotes. You could go out and buy a universal remote that would suit your needs or if you have a Pocket PC take a look at TV Remote Controller from PDAWin. Don't let the name fool you as this remote software can control a lot more than your TV. This would include your VCR, DVD, Stereo System, etc. Of course if all you want to do is change the channel on you TV, this software can do this too. Ever since setting up the home theatre in I have been drooling over a Pronto remote from Philips, the Pronto is a touch screen remote that can be programmed and you can even create your own templates. Remote 3.0 can use these templates created for the Pronto (CFC Mode). There are many templates you can download from the internet or if you would like you can even create some of your your own using the Philips Pronto software, this is available free of charge from Philips. With this option you can have macro's to do multiple things, image pressing one button or taping the screen once to; Turn on the TV, turn on the Amplifier, turn on the DVD player, adjust the Amplifier to DVD mode, adjust to surround sound, and then start the DVD playing in the DVD Player. This what a good remote (or program) can do. You can also use your own graphics and layout patterns. This is a fantastic option, but keep in keep in mind that it will take quite a bit of work to create a template like the ones captured here. Remote has several templates built in and is preset for a number of devices, if the Infrared does not work properly or your device is not listed you can teach the software the codes from your existing remote. Version 3 has learning capabilities!
The range is quite good, and after testing sitting on a number of couches and
aiming the PDA at the TV I found the remote worked from position almost every
time. This started to drive my friends a little crazy, they were not longer in control
of their own TV! The range is nowhere near as powerful as the units that are
designed to be remotes but this is to be expected as
the Jornada was not designed to be beaming information across the room.
If for some reason you find the strength not strong enough, you can find
instructions on how to build a repeater on the website.
