does not do email

So you like to use MS Outlook as your desktop application for, contacts, notes, to do list and scheduler? You have a PalmOS handheld? Wish the two could share the same data? Well, you guessed it PocketMirror Pro does just that, it synchronizes the data from Outlook to your handheld. You may have received the standard version with your handheld, the professional version does much, much more.

PocketMirror Pro is not the only application that can share your data at this time; however it does have some features that stand out. One of the big features that stands out is the ability to synchronize Outlook subfolders. Up until trying PocketMirror Pro I did not use Outlook subfolders very much. This feature of Outlook, lets your organize your contacts in a much nicer fashion. PocketMirror Pro does the same organization on your handheld. If you use other folders more than the default folder that Outlook gives you, you can tell PocketMirror Pro to use those folders as the default for synchronizing your data.

The software does not prompt you if there is a conflict between the desktop and the handheld. In the preference settings you already told it what to do when a conflict arises. The default is to create a duplicate record, if this happens it will be in the log file that the Palm Conduit creates. Your system will prompt you to check the log file if anything out of the ordinary happens, this way you can know about it yet don't have to be at the computer to have a synchronization to happen. Just press the button and walk away, come back in a couple of minutes when you know it should be done. Or you could use a utility to have your Palm Sync at pre-determined times during the day.

There are many options you can choose when Synchronizing your data: Synchronize, Handheld overwrites PC, PC overwrites handheld and do nothing are the standard ones we all know. You have many options with PocketMirror Pro, you can sync only once or twice per day or, or maybe you want a new note colour by items created on the handheld. You did know you can have different colour notes in Outlook didn't you?  There is a one time quick action you can perform as well, see the list in the screen capture. This would useful if you wanted to have a backup of you data in the Palm Desktop software or need a recovery of your handheld.

PocketMirror Pro 3.1 does not do anything with email. The default PalmOS conduit can sync your email from Outlook. After being able to organize my contact data via subfolders it would be nice to be able to do the same with email. This would require Palm (or someone else) to come up with customizable category fields within Mail for the handhelds. As Palm, and every other handheld manufacturer seem to be heading into the wireless data area, this is an idea that maybe Palm needs too look at.

One thing I did not expect when testing this software is that it would make me use Outlook more efficiently. PocketMirror Pro showed me that I could use Outlook in a more organized fashion than I already was. This was in part to the fact that I wanted the data on my handheld as well as Outlook. Having a handheld is all about organization for most people, yes they can play games and be book readers etc. but the main purpose you probably purchased a handheld was to get rid of that paper day-timer and be more organized. Being able to have all your data in one application on your PC is certainly a step in the right direction for getting organized.

Final Words:
The Palm desktop application may be OK for some. For those of us Outlook users, PocketMirror Pro lets you use the power of Outlook and still get your data on your handheld. The synchronization is very fast and efficient. It's nice to have complex software that is very easy to use, PocketMirror Pro lets you be more organized but you don't need to know a lot about it. This is one piece of software I would say you want to "set and forget". Just don't forget too long, you may want to play with the settings at a later date. With the icon now in the Outlook tool bar, the settings are never far away.
